A Quick Message From Jack: You Can Do It!!!!
I LOVE to talk…so if you wanna skip my rambling, just scroll down and enjoy the patterns :).
Hi everyone! This is Jack, The Pumpkin Lady’s hubby…she’s the artist and talent, I just take care of the techie stuff 😊. Yep…I TOTALLY married up! Anyway, I wanted to hop in and chat with you all for a minute.
As many of you know, Lisa is a professional pumpkin carver. I, on the other hand, have a hard time drawing a straight line with a ruler, never mind creating a Glowing Halloween Masterpiece! Now imagine me at a show, a complete triangle-eye-cutting carver, trying to field a gazillion questions…as if I was the expert LOL! Intimidated? You bet ya! But things got a lot better!
Lisa started showing all sorts of little Tips & Tricks and before I knew it, I was helping carve out display pumpkins…and they came out great! So, if this 50-year-old, artistically-challenged, pumpkin-carving neophyte can make these patterns work…anyone can…and probably a lot better than me! It’s actually pretty easy once you get started.
The first thing I had to do, after dee-gooing the pumpkin, was to transfer the pattern to the pumpkin. So, I started taping the pattern to the pumpkin…and I’m sure that anyone watching this fiasco likened it to an episode of I Love Lucy (imagine Edward Scissorhands trying to hang wallpaper). Now Lisa, with all her artistic awesomeness, showed me how to make small tears around the edges of the paper. Low and behold, the pattern ended up nice and flat against the pumpkin…SORCERY…PURE SORCERY!
Next, she handed me one of those little poker tools that comes with most of those inexpensive carving sets at the store. She had me start poking along the lines of the pattern in small (roughly 1/8”) intervals. Once I did that for the entire pattern, she told me to take the pattern off (without ripping it too much so I could still use it as a reference).
Now this next step, is probably my favorite part of the whole process…yep, it still blows my mind (Full Disclosure: I am EASILY amused). Lisa handed me a small bowl of plain white baking flour, then had me start rubbing it all over the pumpkin. Remember the look of pure joy and excitement on Chevy Chase’s face when the Christmas lights finally started working in Christmas Vacation? That was TOTALLY me when I saw that the flour made every single dot from the pattern pop out bright as day, which made the pattern as easy to follow as a dot-to dot picture. It was freaking awesome! (Please see Full Disclosure at the beginning of this paragraph).
Lisa then handed me one of those cool little safety carving saws that came with the pattern poker. She showed me the coolest trick…keep the saw moving and rotate it like a radio dial when going around curves. Oh man…it made cutting rounded sections out SUPER easy (and kept me from breaking the saw).
Last thing was lighting pumpkin. We dropped an LED candle in there and BAM, I had my Halloween Masterpiece glowing!
Now, the most important thing when carving a pumpkin, is to have fun. In all honesty, it doesn’t matter at all how it turns out as long as you had a blast doing it!
