For the art of Punch Needle, you use the simplest of tools to get the most remarkable results! A punch needle tool and threader, weavers cloth on a gripper frame, a pencil or permanent pen, a small pair of scissors and your favorite colors of thread are it…and perhaps a little imagination!
Working from back to front, the needle punches through the weavers cloth. Weavers cloth is made from both cotton and polyester. The polyester stretches, allowing the needle to poke through, then snaps back into place when the needle is removed, the cotton catching and holding tight to the thread to leave behind a small loop on the reverse side, the front, of the design. Snugly punching the stitches close to one another forms a dense picture of loops, rich in texture and color.
Here you’ll find designs suitable for framing. But don’t let us stop you. The same design that can be turned into a framed picture for your wall could also be turned into a pillow or pin cushion, a pocket for posies or basket adornment, or may decorate a jug or even the center of your table. One could even use just a tiny area of the design to punch a sweet ornament to hang from your Christmas or Halloween tree! Feel free to experiment!
The colors of thread are just a suggestion. The patterns mostly call for Valdani Perle Cotton Floss, but you could substitute your own variations of color by using embroidery floss from DMC or Sullivan, separating the floss into three thin strands to more easily thread a needle. This way you could adhere strictly to the design or have the colors more fully match your own home décor. When your designs are completed, and you are ready to show them off…do it here!
