Perhaps heaven isn’t a place. It’s a feeling. It’s harvest home…

Harvest home means bringing in the harvest at the end of the season. These days we may make an annual family outing to the pumpkin patch, grab a few decorative gourds, and snag a few stalks to make a sweet scarecrow to decorate the front porch, but we wouldn’t call that bringing in the harvest, now would we?

But we do have an image that comes to mind when we hear the phrase “Harvest home.” We think about our actual home…and how it feels come the colors of autumn.

We go about our day, feeling a shift in the air. The humidity blows away in the fall breeze and the temperature drops. Dressed in layers, our bare cheeks get rosy in the frosty chill until we open our front door and are enveloped in the warmth!

Someone’s lit a crackling fire and turned up the thermostat. Coming home feels like being wrapped in a warm flannel blanket. We inhale spicy aromas of cinnamon and nutmeg as pies bake to a golden brown in a hot oven. Knitted wool socks are pulled over cold toes. We cuddle with the cats on the couch while our old dog sighs sleepily on the braided rag rug by the hearth.

This is home.

What does harvest home feel like to you? Is it sipping a pumpkin latte with your kid back from college? Singing in the choir at a homecoming service? Raking up leaves for the umpteenth time with your Grandad while the children jump in the piles, scattering leaves and giggles in their wake?

Is it your family around the Thanksgiving table? Friends dropping by with a jar of hot cocoa mix? A neighborhood bonfire where everyone brings the makings for s’mores?

Perhaps heaven isn’t a place. It’s a feeling. It’s harvest home…
