I can watch all the movies and just marvel at the effects, though the child inside still gets a little chill when the pirates make a skeletal shift in the moonlight.
I was four years old when my parents took my brothers and I to Disney World. The place where our wildest dreams come true! In my case…nightmares!
It was so exciting to go on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride because it was a water ride! We were to float through this exciting magical world of pirates and parrots, piles of gold doubloons and majestic ships. I think. Because…really…I don’t remember much.
Except. Canons exploding. Muskets firing. And drunk pirates rampaging a village. And oohhhhhh so many piratey skeletons…everywhere! I clamped my eyes shut tight, duck my head, then get scared they might be sneaking up to grab me, so I’d pop my head up for another quick look, squeak in fear, then pop back down again. Horrors!
I can laugh about it now, 40+ years later. I can watch all the movies and just marvel at the effects, though the child inside still gets a little chill when the pirates make a skeletal shift in the moonlight. But the thrill of the ride is still there, except now I want to sail the seas with the pirates, if only in my dreams.
Pro Tips: Here’s a few tips to make your bony pirate frightfully good!
- The eyepatch is attached to the pumpkin by just a few narrow pieces. When cutting here, be very precise! An overcut may make the piece fall out altogether! If it does happen, use a broken piece of toothpick to push one end into the pumpkin, and the other end into the patch, then push them together. Voila! A pumpkin patch for your pirate!
- Pirates are an aggressive bunch, known as much for their fighting as their drinking! When carving the teeth, these don’t have to look to smooth…and it’s okay to be missing a few! After all, they probably had more than one knocked out in a fight or two, right?
