A Ghostly Greeting – Pumpkin Carving Pattern

Tell the truth…when you think of a Halloween ghost, don’t you imagine it as…plump? Fluffy? Or is it just a little wispy thing that goes bump in the night?

In my imagination, ghosts are…blobby. But, in real life? The few times I thought I’d met a spirit I didn’t see anything at all. I heard disembodied footsteps coming down the stairs and then fading off as it passed my chair. Then I heard myself wheeze trying to catch my breath!

No. It was not a dark and stormy night. Neither Casper nor his brothers popped out from behind my chair. My cats? Passed out and accounted for. It was a bright, sunny afternoon, so normal in its “averageness” I would have never remembered that wintry day if not for that!

I will swear to you to this day that, whatever it was, it was just as real as the cat sleeping on my lap right now. Honestly, I don’t really want to know what it was…I just want to know that it won’t happen again! I’ll keep the ghosts on my pumpkins, not in my house, thank you very much!

Pro Tip: There are two tricky areas in this design that are actually easy to deal with.

  1. Carve out the inside of the letters with care! Take your time here and be really precise on the corners between the letters. If you overcut here, the letters won’t stay connected. But what if it still happens and the letters sag? I always keep a few paper clips nearby for pumpkin repairs! Break of a little piece of the wire, about a half inch long or less, with wire cutters or by wiggling til the thin wire breaks, then stick one side of the wire in each letter and push them back into place. Voila! A “pumpkin patch!”
  2. The highlights of the eyes are tiny, and a small nail can easily push out the highlights. Do this BEFORE you carve out the area around the eyes. Keep the shine in the center to make the ghost a little cross-eyed OR poke out each highlight in a different spot to make the eyes look really goofy. Either way, your ghost will look Spooktacular!
